Excerpt from International Clinics: A Quarterly of Clinical Lectures on Medicine, Surgery, Gynaecology, Pediatrics, Neurology, Dermatology, Laryngology, Ophthalmology, and Otology; April, 1891 IT is proposed to make this periodical a complete post-graduate course Of medical instruction. The rapid strides with which our pro fession is moving towards the goal of an exact science have brought into greater prominence the clinical teacher. The didactic professor presents in a formal and well-considered manner the position of the science of medicine in its most advanced stage, as to the study Of dis ease and the methods of its detection, prevention, and cure; the clini cal teacher supplements the course Of instruction by making practical these formularies and applying them, in the presence Of the student, to the individual case. The one deals with the science, the other with the art. TO those who are unable to attend a course of clinical in struction and learn directly from the bedside the very latest methods for the detection and cure of disease, the stenographic reports from the ward or amphitheatre, corrected by the teacher himself, will vividly portray the picture as presented to the class, and thus at a distance they can benefit by the instruction. It will be the aim Of the editors to publish only such lectures as are most instructive and most practical. The large amount of material which they receive from the stenogra pbers is carefully read, and those lectures which appear to them to be most useful are returned to the lecturers for their revisal, with any suggestions that seem to be necessary, and this matter then classified will appear quarterly. In a number Of instances articles containing illustrative cases have been written especially for publication in the series. It will be the endeavor Of the editors to represent all well known colleges Of medicine and hospitals Of the United States, Great Britain, and Canada, through their most prominent teachers, and to cover the whole field, if not in each number, at least during the year. The excellence Of the articles in this, the first Of the series, indicates the interest which the undertaking has awakened in the contributors, and should be a guarantee Of its success. Clinical Lectures on Klein and Bion outlines the basic ideas in their thinking and shows in detail how these ideas can be used to tackle a clinical problem. The contributors correct some common misconceptions about Kleinian analysis, while demonstrating the continuity of their everyday work with seminal ideas of Klein and Bion. Originally given as a series of lectures intended to acquaint the general public with recent developments in psychoanalytic thinking and practice, the papers in this book cover the most fundamental ideas put forward by Klein and Bion; child analysis, Klein's use of the concepts of unconscious phantasy, projective identification, the paranoid-schizoid and depressive positions, Bion's study of psychotic thinking, his ideas of the relation between container and contained, and the usefulness of the ideas of reversible perspective in understanding 'as if' personalities. In particular, this book provides an eminently readable and authoritative introduction to some of the most original and controversial concepts ever put forward in psychoanalysis.

This work is a collection of Carl Wenicke’s lectures on neuropsychiatry translated into English for the first time. Beginning with basic concepts about normal brain function, the book moves to clinical topics, dealing first with chronic mental disorders and 'paranoid states', and then to the more complex area of acute mental disorders. Many of the featured topics are still clinically relevant, and matters of contemporary debate. Carl Wernicke is one of the pioneers of neurology and psychiatry; clinicians, researchers and historians will find this of great interest.
